Over the past few years. the Baltimore Humane Society has come across a few pets with what is known as Cherry Eye. Cherry Eye is the prolapse of the third eyelid’s tear gland. When this happens, you will see red swollen glands coming out of the corner of your pets eye. Cherry Eye is treated with surgery to move the gland back in place.

Current BHS resident Starr had Cherry Eye and is now as beautiful as ever after her surgery!

Thanks for the link to such great information… the most informative I’ve seen. I have a foster pup (that I ended up adopting) that has a cherry eye. My vet doesn’t like to perform the surgery because of recurrence and the specialty opthalmic practices are super expensive. I’d be grateful if you know of any vets in the Baltimore area that have a good success rate with this surgery and provide it at a reasonable cost. (I know it’s an expensive surgery, but $1500-1700 seems to be a bit much, especially if it might require redoing.) I would so appreciate any information you might have about local vets. I live in northern Balto County but will go anywhere within an hour’s drive.
Thank you for adopting and fostering a dog in need! We would suggest that you call around to your local vet offices to get quotes. Some offices may be cheaper than others.
